What is a Bunion and How are They Treated?
Bunions
Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe joint. Also referred to as “hallux valgus”, bunions are created when bone or tissue at this joint move out of place. Years of abnormal movements and pressure on the joint make this disorder progressively worse. Bunions are the result of both genetic and environmental factors. Joint flexibility plays a role in how tolerable bunions can be. Shoe choice and walking habits also contribute to this condition. Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can lead to bunions as well.
If you are experiencing join pain, numbness or redness and believe you have a bunion, we can diagnose your condition. Bunions are permanent unless there is surgical intervention, but there are measures that can be taken to slow their progression. Potential recommendations include:
-
Maintaining a healthy weight.
-
Using shoe inserts so your feet are positioned correctly in your shoes.
-
Buying shoes with enough space at the toe area.
Bunions that cause significant pain may be treated with surgery. A surgeon will put the toe back in the correct position and will remove the bony bump.
Schedule your appointment today and we will recommend a treatment plan based on your unique health profile.
