Hammertoes

A hammertoe is a deformity that occurs due to an abnormal bend in the middle joint of the toe.  Improper fitting shoes, trauma, foot structure, and certain diseases can cause this condition.  There are two types of hammertoes—flexible and rigid.  If the affected toe can still be moved at the joint, it is flexible hammertoe, and may have more treatment options.  A rigid hammertoe occurs when the toe can no longer be moved due to rigid tendons.

To relieve the pain and pressure caused by hammertoe, you may need to wear different shoes, wear inserts, or consult a foot surgeon if the pain is severe.
